A couple of weeks ago I did a day’s street workshop with Brian Lloyd Duckett in the West End and Soho.
Brian has talked at our camera club and he’s very active on Facebook and Instagram, so I know his work well. His style is very different from mine, so I was looking to be pushed a little outside my comfort zone.
I’m not sure how well I achieved that, but I did discover several new photography spots in London, especially Jermyn St, which has some interesting reflections visible in the windows of some of the older shops.
Among the exercises we were given was to shoot very close to people.
I tried in several locations to achieve more ‘complex’ and layered images, such as those popularised by Alex Webb. This is anathema to styles popular in UK camera clubs, but it just follows a different aesthetic - compare the formal compostitions of Italian Renaissance paintings with the complex and fragmented works by, say, Degas, Renoir and Bracque as an example of what I mean.
Anyway, on this occasion I got a lot that failed, while this is one that nearly works for me: more practice is clearly needed!
