Nearly Christmas in Cambridge

Every year in the run-up to Christmas, Cambridge Camera Club members have a photowalk in the centre of Cambridge to record our own takes on the various pre-holiday goings on.

This year’s trip was on Saturday the 21st. We were treated to glorious afternoon light from the low sun, but local Stagecoach bus drivers were on strike so I travelled in by train and walked into the centre from the station - hence my images are more widely spread across the city than usual, and I had to leave early.

Santa’s Vegan Elf Workers’ Co-operative.

The Arjuna wholefood emporium has been a stalwart of the Mill Road scene for decades. You can tell you’re in Cambridge because they’ve got the apostrophes on their signs in the right places!

A colourfully dressed traveller on the platform, and of course with a bike.

Autumnal hues.

I liked the way the low sun caught the girl’s hair and matched its highlighting of the chestnut tones in the tree’s dry leaves.

A quiet smoke in Station Square.

Yes, Mill Road is a target-rich environment for the street photographer.

Nice light across the side of the University Arms.

In the pink.

This little group was heading for the front entrance of the University Arms, presumably for a stylish lunch. I liked the way the 4 conventionally dressed individuals shepherded their spectacular friend across the road.

I do wonder slightly if she might be some sort of celebrity? Or maybe a famous curtain designer…

Ghost of Christmas Present.

The discarded clothing, sleeping bag and cardboard sign by the cash machine brought me down to earth.

Nice Sprouts.

Cambridge Market - another happy hunting ground for street photography.

On King’s Parade.

The north end of King’s Parade, by the Senate House and Great St. Mary’s, gets wonderful raking afternoon light at this time of year.
